An essential component of a comprehensive traffic solution is to reduce reliance on cars for travel within the neighbourhood. A key part of this is to have schools and child care centres within walking distance of where people live.
It is great news, therefore, that public school trustee Mari Rutka, Willowdale MPP David Zimmer and I were able to jointly announce plans for a new Avondale school. The announcement was, appropriately, made at a large get-together in Avondale Park organized by the Avondale Community Condo Association. Trustee Rutka has been working on this project for several years. Minister Zimmer assisted with Provincial Government permissions to move forward. I added a proposal for City funding for a child care centre to be incorporated into the new school. It’s great to see elected officials working together to achieve good things for the community.
Although the need for child care at Avondale is obvious – even from seeing the number of young children enjoying the park on the day of the announcement – my office will be spearheading a childcare needs assessment of the community over the coming months. If you are interested in getting involved with the planning for a child care centre in the Avondale community, please contact Catherine in my office.
