Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon – May 1 (ROAD CLOSURES)

The community of Willowdale is fortunate to play host to the start of the 2016 Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon on Sunday, May 1.  This international event will draw 14,000 runners to our community representing more than 50 countries.  Race organizers expect to raise $1.2-million in 2016 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, Sick Kids and other local charities. To date, runners in the annual Toronto Marathon have raised $7.5-million for Princess Margaret.

Future Improvements at Edithvale Park Community Meeting – April 11

John is pleased to announce that as of May 1st, 2016, the City enters into a lease agreement with the TDSB for use of the school board land on the south west corner of the park.  This additional green space will allow Edithvale Community Centre and the public to use the space freely and for recreation programming.  This past summer the City also acquired the remaining residential properties on Finch Avenue for park use allowing the long awaited completion of the park.

York Cemetery Community Meeting – March 9

York Cemetery has a long and proud history of supporting the growth and evolution of the North York community.

As part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2017, Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries plans to donate approximately 13 acres of land at the west end of the York property to the City of Toronto for the creation of a nature park.  The new park will feature pedestrian pathways and other natural features and will serve local residents for generations to come.

At the conclusion of a successful Parks Summit, John has circulated the feedback form online for residents unable to attend this meeting.  If you are interested in taking action in one, or several, of your local parks, the feedback form is available here.

John’s office will be independently contacting residents that have expressed interest in getting involved and connecting them with other residents who have expressed the same interest in their area.

Remembrance Day Services in North York

Each year on November 11, Canadians acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country during times of war, military conflict and peace.  The City of Toronto hosts services at Old City Hall and Civic Centre across the city.  All residents are invited to attend these events.

Help fight the flu and reduce your risk of getting influenza by attending one of Toronto Public Health’s free flu vaccine clinics from October 28 to November 30 at nine locations across the city. The flu vaccine is also available in doctor’s offices and more than 450 Toronto pharmacies.

In 2015, Nuit Blanche will be extending its reach to North York with the installation of internationally acclaimed artist JR’s INSIDE OUT. This ‘group action’ production consists of taking candid portraits with community members in a mobile photo booth, printing out the photos in a large format, and helping to install them in public spaces.
