Many residents are familiar with car sharing companies such as ZipCar or AutoShare that allow subscribers to jump in a car at a local parking space and effectively rent the vehicle by the hour for their trips or errands. Car share memberships can be a more cost effective means of transportation when compared to the costs of owning a car – or in some cases, a second car. Locally, these programs have added benefit as fewer cars owned in the community means fewer cars on our roads.
Over the past months I have been working collaboratively with a new community board named Willowdale Traffic Solutions. Their evolving mandate is to promote car sharing opportunities through such means as building community relationships between car share companies and the residents of local condominiums and their boards.
I am a large supporter of these programs as a traffic reduction measure and have strongly encouraged the creation of more spaces for car share vehicles.
