Community Information Session on Refugee Accommodation

November 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The City of Toronto has leased a new temporary accommodation for refugee/asylum claimants in the Newtonbrook and Willowdale communities.

Homes First, a service provider, has teamed with refugee-focused support organizations to provide specialized support services onsite to assist people with their claim and other settlement issues on behalf of the City.

Read the Q&A below to find out more information about this initiative.

Q: Who will be staying at this location, and for how long?
A: Approximately 200 single adults, more than half of them women. Refugees tend to be eager to find work and permanent housing; the average stay in a shelter is 3 months or less.

Q: Why this location?
A: The current owners of the site (Times Group Corporation), who were newcomers to Canada more than 30 years ago, approached the City to make it available for refugee housing while they prepare a development application to be considered by the Planning Department. The site is located close to public transit and community facilities.

Q: Why now?
A: The City accommodates people who, for a variety of reasons, need emergency housing. The need is so great that our existing shelters tend to fill up, especially during winter months.

Relocating refugees from existing shelters to temporary housing at 5800 Yonge St. frees up much needed beds while at the same time providing more specialized programs to meet the particular needs of refugees.

Q: What services and supports are onsite for the newcomers?
In this new service location, refugees/asylum claimants will be able to access overnight accommodation and specialized services delivered onsite. These supports will be made available through partnerships with community agencies as well as the City’s Newcomer Office and other City divisions, as required. Homes First Society will operate the site.
