Yonge Street Transformation

Yonge Street Transformation

The future of Willowdale looks much brighter today after Council strongly supported the plan to Transform Yonge between Sheppard and Finch.

When it’s completed, we’ll have a wide boulevard for pedestrians, restaurant patios, plantings, and a bicycle lane separated from both cars and pedestrians. The space will be created by reducing traffic lanes to two in each direction, plus turn lanes and bus bays.

The plan – which was strongly supported by community leaders, urban experts and advocates for pedestrian and cycling safety – will change our section of Yonge from a highway carrying mostly regional traffic to a main street for our community.

Many thanks to all those who took the time to understand the proposal by attending one of the approximately 20 community consultation meetings, reading the staff report, and having conversations within their own organizations. After doing so, the vast majority of those with initial reservations ended up supporting the plan.

Unfortunately, it may take 6-8 years before we can join one another for a celebratory meal or drink. Detailed design will take time, as will the construction itself. Council has also wisely decided to first complete the Doris service road link from Avondale to Sheppard, so that those living east of Yonge have the option of easily taking this route to avoid congestion at Yonge/Sheppard.
